Combatting Human Trafficking: The Role of Truckers Against Trafficking

Translating for Truckers Against Trafficking has been eye opening to say the least. If you have not heard of human trafficking you must be living in a box somewhere. Human Trafficking has been going on since the slave days of North America and continues today as one of the largest forms of crime on the planet. There are various forms of human trafficking from sex trafficking of women, men, and children, to labour trafficking of immigrants and minors. Every industry is touched by human trafficking and even though we often think that human trafficking isn’t happening in our neighbourhood it is rampant in every area of the country regardless of status. Low income areas are often found to be trafficking sex crimes where wealthy areas often use labour trafficking. Recently a women in her mid forties was arrested for using her skin care spas as brothels in Southern California.

I learned about the human trafficking problem through my husband who is part of the trucking industry and introduced our business through a colleague to Truckers Against Trafficking. The trucking industry has been very passionate about battling the human trafficking problem as they are many times visiting the same places as traffickers frequent such as truck stops and service areas. Highways are the main way of travel for traffickers so they don’t get detected and our Canadian highway the 401 is a very popular corridor for traffickers as it runs directly from the United States through Ontario to the Province of Quebec providing easy access to Eastern Canada and beyond. My husband recently purchased a Truckers Against Trafficking (TAT) collectors truck to add to his collection to help raise funds for the organization. TAT has been a leader in battling human trafficking bringing awareness across North America through various industries but there are also many Canadian organizations such as Know Human Trafficking and more. All these organizations on both sides of the border use the same phone numbers to report crimes for consistency.

Over the years I have done translation for many organizations but Truckers Against Trafficking has been the main one as they grow from a National Organization in the United States to an International Organization across North America. I have learned a lot reading through their materials and it has opened my eyes on the problem. January is Human Trafficking Prevention Month and January 11th is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day in the United States and in Canada it is February 22nd. I would invite you to learn about human trafficking as it is happening all around us. If you suspect or see elements of human trafficking in your travels you can call 1-888-3737-888 in the United States and 1-833-900-1010 in Canada to report any observations and both countries are taking human trafficking very seriously. I would encourage you to inform yourself by signing up for the Truckers Against Trafficking Newsletter or visiting their website for more information at https://tatnonprofit.org
