If you are looking for a place to travel during the Summer and like the feel of Europe then Quebec City has to be a stop on the map. One of the oldest cities in Canada founded in 1608 by Samuel de Champlain, it got much of it’s name due to the river that flows by the city. The St. Lawrence River narrows at a point by the city and was given the name “Kébec” an Algonquin word meaning “where the river narrows.” It is the second largest city in the Province of Quebec and the seventh largest city in Canada. It may be large, but it’s quaint and that’s the charm. The city is split into two parts with the newer part of the city with hotels, shopping, bars, and a host of other amenities which attract many travellers to the area. Close to the river is old Quebec City which is surrounded by a wall and is lined with tiled streets.
Quebec City always reminds me of the charm of Europe with quaint little shops and plenty of cafés lining the streets. Within the old city the old stone walls draw you into another time zone from the past. Even the way you travel around from cars to horse and buggy help you feel as though you have gone back in time. The streets are lined with artists offering caricatures, portraits, and musicians play beautiful music. You can find buskers in the street along side of ceremonies celebrating Canada Day and much more. It really is a magical place.
There are a few things I would like to suggest if you are traveling to the Quebec City area. The first is to take a good pair of shoes, there will be a lot of walking in the city and much of it is on tiled roads with many hills. I always like to try and stay in the old city as driving or parking around Quebec City can be a problem. Summer is the busiest time of year especially around Canada Day with their many celebrations and events so certainly plan ahead. We normally like to stay a few days as there is so much to do and if you have a chance catch a show at the Captial Theatre, we have seen some great ones. Most people speak English and you will find English and French throughout the city, but signage will most likely be in French only.
