Many adults hide from winter due to the cold and snow of the season, but during a lockdown even going outside or visiting the beautiful countryside seems like a big deal. They say, “You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone!” This pandemic is certainly showing us that. Most people are saying that a trip to the store is a big deal just to get out of the house.
It’s funny how your body adjusts to the habits of your mind. Being born in the Eastern Townships of Quebec spending winter outside was just another day for kids. Some of my greatest memories are playing outside with my friends in the cold of winter and licking the sap off the trees at my Grandmothers’s sugar bush. As a young adult I moved to Ontario with my husband and began a new life adjusting to the business of the hustle and bustle of Hamilton, but the memories of weekends in Quebec danced in my head.
Later in life after getting remarried we began travelling to the Caribbean for the winter trying to bypass the snow all together. It’s been a decade of sun and beaches during the winter with wonderful memories. Since the pandemic began we have had to change those travel plans and this year cancel the trip all together. As I sit inside wishing to go back to those years of a trip to my native Quebec it seems like a dream.
Maybe this is a time to sit back and reflect on the good things in your life and the memories from the past. We will travel again one day and create those new memories for a future time. Whether travelling to the Caribbean or heading down the street, appreciate the fact that you are healthy and able to move around. If looking to head to the beautiful area of Quebec after the pandemic I have added a link below to a website with wonderful things to do in Quebec. Enjoy the beautiful scenery of the region and don’t forget to practice your French.
