Recently Outridge Translation Services was part of the Professionals of the Highway Tour assisting with French/ English translation services for the trucking industry. It was a fun tour that began in Belleville Ontario and went as far as Princeville Quebec. Although we specialize in document translation this project would be more speaking translation.
My husband operates The Lead Pedal Podcast which showcases the trucking industry and he put this tour together. We were to visit certain locations and talk with people in the industry about their jobs and what they do. The tour will travel throughout Ontario and parts of Quebec throughout July and August. Some of the people on the tour spoke English and French but the deeper we got into Quebec the less English was found.
At one stop in Montreal Quebec I was really put to the test. After standing around watching my husband conduct an interview for a terminal manager that same terminal manager decided that I should do a French only interview with him. This gave me quite a shock, not because of the French, but because of the trucking part. I know a lot about trucking due to my husband being in the industry for many years but conducting my own interview was different. I managed to pull it off but it is hard to think on your feet like that in front of a camera, with no script, and no net as they say.
The issue came up again at our stop in Princeville Quebec with Girouard Excavation but this one was a little easier. On this stop my husband asked the questions in English and then I repeated them in French and vice versa for the answers. At least I didn’t have to come up with the questions to ask.

You can learn more about the Professionals of the Highway Tour here and I must say it was fun to get out on this little road trip. The trucking industry is the lifeblood of our economy and without them the grocery shelves remain empty. In fact that was the main reason for the tour to show people that trucking is an important profession that deserves respect and admiration for those that do the job everyday under trying conditions. Next time you see a truck driver say thank you and give them the respect they deserve. I certainly do!
